Auradon

Take It or Leaf It

Autumn had begun to set in in Auradon. Normally, for the residents of Auradon Prep it would be a time for bonfire parties, drinking mulled cider, certain dances, festivals, and other seasonal events; as well as chatting about the latest fashion trends in jackets and scarves. But with the current situation and the lack of groundskeepers, Autumn meant that it was time for something else: raking leaves. There were quite a few trees on the grounds and most of them had been turning a variety of bright, fiery colors over the past two weeks. And as was usual for the season, those leaves were rapidly beginning to cover the ground. Which for better or worse meant that it was time for the Misrecalled to grab some rakes and get to work. At least there'd be one - or more - awesome leaf piles for anyone inclined to jump into one at the end of it.

Going Nuts

It wasn't all bad news though. Because while none of the trees on the grounds bore any seasonal fruit, a few of them did bear nuts. And with the coming of cooler weather, those nuts were ripe for the harvesting, many of them beginning to drop off the trees. So those not up to raking could grab a basket and go out to do their best impression of a squirrel, gathering nuts to store away for later. The results would both be tasty and a welcome addition to the school's food supply.

Isle

Holding On the Line

Most of the Isle's food supply these days came from the sea. Which, for many of its residents, meant that their days were often spent staring at a line in the water, waiting and hoping for a nibble. This was dull enough at the best of times assuming one wasn't an avid fisherman, but even more so when the fish were being uncooperative. And the latter was definitely the case today, with most of those fishing having not had a bite in hours. Did that prompt complaints? The desire to give up and go take a nap? Pointed critiques of each other's fishing technique? Or were you one of the lucky buggers who actually caught something and you're in the mood to gloat about it to the others to annoy them?

Heck for Leather

If there was one staple of Isle fashion aside form its general raggedness, it was the inclusion of leather. And why not? After all, leather was sturdy, hard wearing, and a must for pirates and punks alike. It made one look cool and tough and totally not like they had escaped from the set of a made for TV movie aimed at teens and tweens. But with access only to what was left in the lockers, it was in somewhat limited supply. There was, however, a solution to this; making their own. The recent killing of party-crashing alligator had provided not only meat but a tough, scaly hide ripe for leather making. With a bit of help from Yen Sid's chemistry supplies and some good old fashioned elbow grease of course.

Or if leather wasn't one's style, there was also the bones and teeth. After all, nothing said 'heck yeah, I'm a villain' quite like a few skeletal accessories. And they would also make for some very handy tools if one knew how to shape them. So many possibilities, so few alligator bits...

"Mallia, this is Roxas. A friend of Lea and Xion. We were hoping you could help us out with some of his favorite treat for him and his friends. And I need to send a message to Lea to let him and Xion know that he's here."

"Of course! And lovely to meet you, Roxas. What is it that you'd like?"

She stood up from where she'd been sitting, doing something with the bottle to tuck it away... but wherever it went, it disappeared, leaving her hands free to be clasped loosely in front of her.

Roxas appreciated the small display of magic, or, slight of hand? It was impressive either way. He certainly couldn't make things disappear into thin air. Luxord had tried to teach him, to no avail. He brought his attention back to the matter at hand. "Sea salt ice cream? It's blue."

Aqua chuckled and considered stepping in, then decided to not, sending a zap to Lea, hoping he'd see it soon. Given how busy he was with getting Xion settled in however, she didn't know that he would. Still, it would do Roxas good to have some time getting to know people and getting used to Auradon as Roxas rather than part of a trio.

Yes, she still missed Terra and Ven, what of it?

"Ice cream...?" She repeated that, thinking about it a second. "So... frozen cream... with salt on it?" She sounded amused, but mostly puzzled. "I could well picture making something of snow and cream and fruit of some sort... but....?" She looked to Aqua for clarification, even as she brought her hands up, turning them over with only a very minor gesture which had her wrist help block the view of them briefly as she spread them.

She hadn't just been holding that bowl a moment ago. There was no mundane, logical way she could have been... certainly not as it was full of what looked a bit like some sort of snowcone-esque dish with a kind of blue-purple streakiness in what was otherwise a kind of off-white hue, the dye of berries mixed imperfectly through the dairy, and a couple shapes that looked an awful lot like big black grapes half buried to one side in it, beside a spoon.

"I'm afraid I'm uncertain how salt ought to figure into that as a flavor, however. It does tend to melt ice, after all...." She took one hand away from the offered bowl, and turned it up to reveal a small pile of rough salt crystals, white and sparkling slightly, in her other palm. "How would this work, now...?" She looked between the two humans... could someone please help clear this up for her?

Roxas's not-heart sunk at the sight of the contents of the bowl. "There's no berries or lumps."

He furrowed his brow and tried to recollect the exact taste, texture, and colour. "It's not just salty, it's sweet too. and it's supposed to be frozen on a stick. And it's kinda a lighter blue..."

He scratched a hand through his hair and sighed. If Axel were here he'd know how to explain it. Roxas was hoping for it to be a surprise though...

Aqua gave Roxas a warm hug. She could have explained it better, but he could do this. She had confidence in him.

"Hmm, so... more like this?" She gestured, and for just a split second, it looked for all the world like the salt had turned into black smoke, and disappeared in the next blink.... but somehow, turning her other hand to pass something to the now-empty one had turned into her holding... well, it wasn't a popsicle stick. It looked more like a skewer trimmed down from a thin branch, as one might use to roast something over a campfire, but shorter. But on it was a semi-spherical sort of shape, neatly run through, its color now matching Aqua's hair.

Maybe it still wasn't quite right, but she was trying! She looked between the two again, holding it up for further feedback.

Roxas wasn't sure what to do with Aqua's arms around him. His chest warmed at the contact, so he let her hold on to him for a moment before he wiggled free to better watch Mallia's hands.

He tried not to let his disappointment show. It was getting closer. They were going to get this right.

"It's more like... A square? Like this." He did his best to outline the shape in the air with his fingers. "And the colour..." He looked around for something similar, excitement growing when he spotted a large serving bowl that seemed to be close to what he remembered the light blue treat looking like. "Kinda like that bowl I think. Oh! and the stick has to be flat, because some of them say winner on them under the ice cream."

Aqua beamed proudly from behind him, giving Mallia a small nod.

She fiddled a little with the shape in her hands as she followed his hint and took a look at the bowl. The shift itself seemed hidden in the change of lighting as its now-flatter sides turned over, seemingly an idle thing... but she looked back down, eyeing it over, considering it carefully.

"And the texture... would it be more like snow, or a bit more like a sweet cheese pie?" She looked between the two, little smile growing some.

Roxas tilted his head, it was obvious how seriously he was taking this task. "I don't know what a cheese pie is. Or snow. But I guess I'd say it's..." He searched for a word. "Solid..? I guess? You have to bite it."

She kissed the top of his head, gently, as she would if he were Ven and she wanted to make sure he knew she was proud of him. and found him little brother super adorable in that exact moment. Mostly she was making mental plans to expand his and Xion's pallets.

"Well, it is that, but... hmm." Still looking to be thinking about it, she turned it over again, and stepped forward a little more, to offer it to him. "Tell me if this seems about right?" Maybe it was? Maybe it wasn't; she wasn't certain. She lifted her other hand, offering one to Aqua as well. Where had that come from, nowhere again? ...Well, yes, exactly that, but Aqua was doubtless used to such by now from her....

Roxas accepted the ice cream eagerly. It didn't look exactly as he remembered, but it was close enough. The taste was what really mattered. He took a bite. Salty, sweet, it melted on his tongue, it was almost perfect, it was just missing something... He couldn't quite put his finger on it. He took another bite and came to the same conclusion.

He turned to look up at Aqua. She'd had it before, maybe she could say what was missing.

Aqua chuckled and took the portion offered to her. "Thank you, Mallia. Roxas what do you think?"

"Hmm... not quite right yet?" She was watching his reaction carefully, though she didn't seem put off by this any, merely thoughtful. This would be so much easier, if she had some to try, to simply replicate it....

He glanced back to Mallia, relieved to see she didn't seem upset by this. "It's almost right... There's just something missing... I was hoping Aqua might know? I just don't know how to describe it." He looked back to Aqua hopefully.

Aqua smiled and then to Mallia gave a full list of ingredients and instructions for how one would normally make it, presuming a low tech world set. So she described a shaker rather than a full on ice cream machine, ending with a detailed description of flavor, texture, and for appearance...

She held out a hand and the Nanobots stored in her bloodstream formed what looked exactly like the sort of Sea Salt Ice Cream bar that Roxas would be used to. "Sadly I can only replicate the seeming, not the taste or weight," she said apologetically. "You really don't want to try eating nanobots."

She listened intently, nodding a bit as she did, back to smiling a little as she considered it. She eyed the image of it Aqua showed her, nodded again... and then, hesitantly, took her hand from her chin, to reach to the ice cream she'd handed Aqua. She simply passed her hand over it, and though it was quick, it now looked like the one she'd been shown. A similar little gesture over Roxas's, and his had changed as well, pristine again, without evidence of the bite he'd taken out of it.

"Would this be closer, then...?"

It may or may not have been exactly as they'd remember, but it was surely well within the bounds of how someone would be able to make it, for having followed Aqua's instructions.

"Should someone actually make some... I think I should very much enjoy trying a bit."

Roxas took an eager bite, and his face lit up. "It's perfect! Aqua if you knew the whole time why would you make me explain it?" He wanted to be annoyed, but he was simply too excited about the ice cream in his hand for it to bother him too much. "I'm not good at that kind of stuff."

"Because that is how you get better at that kind of stuff," she said with an affectionate chuckle, ruffling his hair. Then she smiled at Mallia. "I suspect we're about to be heading off to bring ice cream to Xion and Lea if we can find them. Would you like to join us, or should we meet you back here so you can stay near the food?"

"Mmm... I should stay here for a while longer, I think. I haven't seen everyone I usually do yet today." Which didn't mean that they couldn't always ask her later, of course. But it was easiest for them to find her, when they'd know where she'd be.

"But if you're looking to deliver...?" Another little gesture, and she offered up two more of the light blue treats, for whichever of them might want to take them. There were four hands between the two of them, so surely this would work out well enough?

"Hey!" Roxas ducked out from under Aqua's hand indignantly. "Maybe I don't want to get better at that kind of stuff." He took a step forward as Mallia offered up the ice cream, and with practiced ease, scooped them both up in his free hand. It spoke to many a trip juggling ice cream for three, even if he only remembered it ever being him and Axel... "Thank you! I know Axel will be happy to have this. Do you... think you could make this one say winner? On the stick, but only where the ice cream covers?" He switched one to the hand with his own partially eaten one, and held up the other hopefully.
